Boarding a bus soon? You may need another quarter

Staff Writer

Metro Transit has proposed several changes to its local bus routes and fares. The fares for local bus routes will go up 25 cents, and some local lines will be eliminated altogether.

Non-rush hour fares will rise from $1.25 to $1.50 and rush hour fares will rise from $1.75 to $2.00.

The increase in fares, if approved, will be implemented July 1, while the changes to the routes, also contingent on approval, will be made in September and December. Changes have been proposed because of a projected budget shortfall of approximately $60 million over the next two years, due in part to rising gas prices.

The changes will alter junior Lauren Hazenson’s plans next year. She and a friend will be moving to
Grand Avenue and will take the city bus to school each day.

She called the proposed fare hike “ridiculous,” adding that she’d have to pay three dollars per day, which “adds up.”

Around 70 percent of Metro Transit routes will be impacted by a 10 percent reduction of regular route service.

Metro Transit and the Met Council, another organization that runs parts of the public transportation system in the Twin Cities, will hold seven local public hearings, including one in St. Paul and two in Minneapolis (see sidebar).

The Council would like attendees to register in advance by calling the Metropolitan Council Data Center at 651-602-1140.
