Letter to the Editor: Join ‘Take Back the Night’ and help work to protect America’s women
Right now in America there is a war being waged against women. It is a brutal and widespread war that needs to be stopped.
Think of it this way: Somewhere in America, a woman is raped every 90 seconds, and a woman is battered every 15 seconds. Let’s say you and a friend sit down for lunch č by the time you leave that table an hour later, 40 women will have been raped and 240 women will have been battered. All this in just one hour.
It is one thing to know the facts about sexual and domestic violence. It is another thing to do something
about it. MPIRG hosts an event each year to give the community the opportunity to do something. On April 7, students and community members will come together at Loring Park in downtown Minneapolis to participate in Take Back the Night.
Take Back the Night is a rally and march with five main objectives: to unite those who wish to make our relationships, families and communities healthier and safer; to celebrate survivors; to demonstrate that violence and exploitation will not be tolerated; to provide information about services and support networks available to help those coping with issues of sexual violence and domestic abuse; and to raise awareness of the problems of sexual violence and assault on campus and throughout the Twin Cities.
Take Back the Night is a way to stand up and say that we are no longer going to allow the rampant problem of sexual abuse and domestic violence to continue. This event is a chance to raise our voices and break the veil of silence that too often accompanies this insidious problem.
This year’s event will feature a speech by Patty Wetterling, whose story has touched so many. A bus will be departing from the Bishop at 5:30 p.m. to take students to and from the event. Please set a side a few hours of your evening on Thursday, April 7, and join with others as we speak out against sexual abuse and domestic violence. I’ll see you at the march!
