Letter to the Editor: Hamline administration failing to address its own policies and ideals

I have never written to the Oracle, but I am writing now out of concern for the failure of Hamline’s diversity policies to live up to the university’s needs.

The administration has clearly deemed it essential that Hamline allow military recruitment on campus, while Hamline’s code bars such activity by organizations that discriminate, as is the case with the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. With this decision, it is clear that the nondiscrimination code is outdated and misleading and makes hypocrites of us.

In fact, it could be a legal liability if students enroll at Hamline under the assumption that the code protects them and that the administration will stand by it. Such students might accuse the university of false advertising or breach of contract.

Therefore, HUSC and the administration should look into changing the antidiscrimination policies and statements of Hamline, either repealing them or adding a clause to make it clear that these are “sunny day” policies that will not be allowed to hinder the administration or fundraising of the university. Such a step is necessary to bring administrative rhetoric into accord with administrative decision-making.
