Letter to the Editor: Help tsunami victims, eat well this Friday night
I’m sure many of you are aware of the thermometer in Bush Library that is keeping track of the Hamline University Students for Tsunami Relief’s fundraising. Currently it is hovering at a bit over $3000, thanks in part to the generosity that the Hamline University community has shown to this great cause, from donating money during J-term bowling to giving up food for the meal-for-money campaign. All of us can be very happy with the good we have thus far done.
But we’re not done yet. The Tsunami Benefit Dinner is quickly approaching on Friday, April 8, at 7:00 p.m. (reception at 6:30 p.m.) in the Klas Center Ballroom. The minimum suggested donation is $25, $15 for students. Every penny given for the benefit dinner will go directly into the field of tsunami relief.
Thanks to a generous donation from Garvin Davenport’s budget, the event is entirely prepaid, meaning all money received will go to UNICEF. This organization was selected because they are putting 100 percent into the field of tsunami relief.
A slideshow, raffle, speeches, and Harry Pontiff’s jazz band will help make it a wonderful and educational night. There will also be plenty of time for conversation during the reception - casual chitchat with students and faculty and networking opportunities with upper-level administration and the Board of Trustees.
Most importantly, though, we will do our part to help the millions devastated by this winter’s terrible tragedy. The media may be looking elsewhere and the dead may be buried, but the rebuilding needs to be done. We can make a difference for many, truly living out our mission statement of becoming “compassionate citizens of the world.”
So surrender the money that you’d otherwise spend at the bar. Take your date to the benefit dinner instead of Olive Garden. Stick around Friday night instead of immediately heading home. Do we have an event for you! Please RSVP to the Student Center Front Desk for preferential seating, or show up to the door the night of April 8. Students for Tsunami Relief look forward to seeing you there!
