Theta Chi member commits suicide during roleplaying game
All was normal at Hamline’s lone fraternity house, until a Theta Chi brother took his own life.
The John Doe, who could not be identified, said in his suicide note that he was disgruntled at an
“unnamed dungeon master” who erroneously ruled against Doe’s Dungeons and Dragons character, resulting in the fictional wizard’s death, university officals said.
“A wizard in an anti-magic sphere CAN’T be affected by a measly fireball!” the note said. “You can’t just say ‘I’m the DM, and I say Drizzt Dangalmageon should die.’ It goes against the Player’s Handbook.”
The suicide was the fourth role-playing game-influenced suicide reported this year, Associate Dean of Students Alan Sickbert said.
