Reversing course, admin upholds diversity policy, tells Rumsfeld to ‘suck it’

Staff Writer

Hamline University will no longer allow U.S. military recruiters to set foot on campus, following the demands of a small-but-rabid student movement calling for an end to discrimination against gays and lesbians.

The university had previously been wary of running afoul of the government and potentially losing millions of dollars in federal aid. University leaders said, however, that money should not be placed above principle.

“We can’t be worried about our pocketbooks when Uncle Sam is discriminating against men who want to wear theirs slung over their shoulder,” said VP for University Relations Dan Loritz. “It’s just unconscionable that we’ve gone this long allowing gays and lesbians to die for their country but not be gay for their country.”

Recruiters will be informed that if they wish to speak with Hamline students, they must first demonstrate their personal acceptance of homosexuals by kissing a member of the same gender and updating their fashion.

“Fatigues are sooo last season,” said Spectrum president Kevin Watson. “It used to be ironic, but now it’s come back full circle again.”

Recruiter ban proponents Graham Lampa and Colin Schumacher said they were happy to see the recuiters go.

“I can’t believe they bought our argument,” Lampa said. “We just don’t like the military much and came up with what we felt was the most powerful excuse to get rid of them, and the gays were it, I guess!”

Schumacher said he expected the university to do more.

“I will not rest until each and every member of the armed forces is either gay or, at the very least, bi-curious,” Schumacher said.
