Gymnasts come back to win at home
After trailing for most of the meet, Hamline’s women’s gymnastics team came back to beat UW-Eau Claire,
UW-La Crosse, and Gustavus at Walker Fieldhouse on the Hamline campus on March 4.
Hamline had all of their six competitors in the floor exercise score over a 9.0, tallying a 45.925 as a team to finish with 180.525 to make the comeback and win at home.
Seniors Ashley Calhoon and Meggan McClelland each scored a 9.275 in the event. Junior Melanie Axvig posted a 9.225, and senior captain Kristin Driscoll added a 9.1.
UW-Eau Claire finished in second place with 180.4. UW-La Crosse was third with a 179.65, while Gustavus was fourth with a 177.175.
Hamline had their best scores in the balance beam, with a 46.375 as a team. McClelland scored a 9.475, while sophomore Caitlin Goodin and Axvig each added a 9.3.
Junior Emily Wind led the way on the uneven bars with a 8.975, and Calhoon paced the team on the vault with a 9.025.
Hamline will next compete on Friday, March 18, at the NCGA West Regional.
The meet will be held at UW-Whitewater at 6 p.m. It counts as the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (WIAC) meet for gymnastics. Hamline is a member of the WIAC in gymnastics only, while all other sports are members of the MIAC.
Hamline will aim to make a return trip back to the national meet, after placing seventh at last year’s NCGA national championship, the recognized championship for NCAA. Div. III gymnastics.
If the Pipers qualify for nationals, they will compete in the national meet April 1ą2 at UW-La Crosse.
