Gifts given, just not reported
Hamline received no charitable donations last year, according to a national survey from the nonprofit Council for Aid to Education.
But that’s because Hamline was simply left off the list, said Dan Loritz, vice president of university relations. The university reported donations of over $12 million to the Council and was surprised to see its name missing in the final survey.
The figure reflected an average fund-raising year, Loritz said, but added that Hamline has also received several deferred gifts (such as money promised in wills and estates), which were not included. Deferred gifts can only be claimed when the university receives them.
The ranking places Hamline first among comprehensive universities in Minnesota. Nine hundred seventy-one institutions reported donations from several sources, including individuals, foundations, corporations and others. Harvard topped the list with $540 million.
