Letter to the Editor: Time to grow up and stop personal attacks

This is a letter of concern regarding the unwelcome “Anyone But Pesko” campaign around campus, amid the showdown of candidates for HUSC president 2005-06. Over the past few days, fliers and posters have been put up all over the student center attacking current HUSC vice president Mike Pesko.

Personally, having worked with Mike on several occasions, I can say that the claims on these fliers are baseless and false. The group “Hamline University Students For Tsunami Relief” (HUSFTR) was founded as a result of Mike’s leadership qualities and dedication toward a very noble cause.

In January, Mike and I met the vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, Mr. Davenport, with regard to funding for the “Tsunami Benefit Dinner” coming up in April.

During this process, I was impressed with Mike’s professionalism in handling the matter; as a direct result, we were successful in getting full sponsorship for the event. Thank you, Mr. Davenport. So far we have raised $3,000 for UNICEF Tsunami Fund, and I am confident that by the end of this semester HUSFTR will be very close to its ambitious target of $10,000.

Mike’s affable interpersonal skills, good leadership qualities and persistence to be acquainted with campus-related issues are laudable and impressive indeed. During the fall 2004 semester, Mike had “coffee dates” with over 40 student organizations at Hamline in an attempt to get to know them better and understand their concerns. As a result, Mike has taken successful measures to address student org concerns. I am confident that Mike will continue to do a remarkable job in successfully tackling students concerns.

Taking into consideration the effort that Mike has put into HUSC and the Hamline community and the subsequent achievements, it is easy to see how he is a very good candidate for HUSC president 2005-06.
It is clear that the accusations on the fliers are baseless, as Mike has time and again proven his dedication to make Hamline a better place for you and me.

I urge all those involved in the childish and immature campaign of needlessly attacking Mike to stop such negative activity with immediate effect.
