HUSC Campaign Coverage: Nelson-Sheldon
Relying on their reputations, Luke Nelson and Josh Sheldon signed up as a presidential candidate team to change HUSC. Should the self-described “underdogs” triumph, Nelson said that his administration would bring student organizations into HUSC by pushing the HUSC executive board to attend org events.
“I’m tired of HUSC asking for orgs' involvement without HUSC getting involved with orgs,” Nelson said.
This process, Nelson explained, would begin with the executive board and would set a precedent by showing orgs that HUSC is more than just a bank and that representatives truly care about the work of orgs.
“There is an invisible, yet obvious, separation of HUSC and orgs,” Nelson said. “People only come when they need money, and not to discuss issues.”
In addition to increasing student HUSC attendance, Nelson said, representatives would be given an opportunity to compromise, something he said is not encouraged in the current administration.
This lack of compromise, Nelson said, can explain the recent removals from HUSC roll call and the dropping attendance.
“In the end, it’s all about people,” Nelson said.
Nelson is currently a HUSC junior representative and president of Theta Chi fraternity.
Sheldon is the scholarship chair for Theta Chi, Inter-Greek Council secretary and the co-coordinator of Mock Trial.
Some highlights from their platform include: HUSC will be involved with student organizations, properly inform students of issues facing HUSC and support campus accessibility through capital improvements.
