Admin: Recruiting will continue on campus

News Editor

The university will continue to allow military recruiters on campus, CLA Dean Garvin Davenport and several professors said.

The decision was first announced in the March CLA faculty meeting after professor Stephen Kellert asked Davenport about the status of the recruiters, professor Duane Cady said.

Davenport said the decision was made by the president’s cabinet, a group consisting of university vice presidents and deans. The group was advised by Hamline’s School of Law and outside experts, he said.

The Oracle reported on March 1 that if the university disallowed military recruitment on campus, they would be denied federal funding.

On the possibility of this happening if the university were to bar military recruiters, Davenport said: “The risk is too great."

He said the administration's decision will stand until a court that has jurisdiction over Hamline's area district makes a decision on the issue.

In the last HUSC meeting of 2004, the body passed a resolution calling on the university administration to bar the United States armed forces from recruiting on campus. Similarly, the CLA faculty passed a resolution urging the administration to uphold the diversity policy. The resolution was passed at the Feb. 2 faculty meeting.

Davenport said, however, that there is a difference between passing resolutions and being fiscally responsible.

The Macalester College student government recently passed a similar resolution asking for a recruiter ban. Administration there has not yet responded.
