Hamline men’s basketball edges out Concordia 82-79
The Piper men’s basketball team stormed back from a 13-point deficit in the second half to defeat Concordia 82-79 Saturday afternoon at Hutton Arena.
Trailing 60-47 with 12:20 left in the game, Hamline (10-15, 8-12 in the MIAC) went on a 14-2 run to cut the lead to one. Senior Brandon Aukes and junior Ryan Montgomery each scored five points during the run.
Aukes, playing in his final game, paced Hamline with 17 points and five rebounds. He was four of 10 shooting.
The Cobbers (13-12, 11-9) upped the lead back to four before Hamline scored eight straight, capped by senior Paul Muenchow’s 18-footer from the baseline to take a 71-67 lead with 4:50 left.
Junior Jon Viemeister kept the Pipers in front with a pair of big three-pointers down the stretch - both giving Hamline a five-point cushion. His 24-footer with 1:47 left in the game gave the Pipers a 79-74 advantage.
Viemeister scored a career-high 16 points. Muenchow added 12 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Adam Hakanson also scored 12 points.
Concordia built a 43-36 halftime edge after shooting 65 percent in the first 20 minutes (13-20). Cobber
Soren Nelson scored all 16 of his points in the first half. The Cobbers were also helped by a Hamline intentional foul and two Piper technicals.
Keith Eckhoff led all scorers with 26 points on seven of 14 shooting, but was called for his fourth foul midway through the second half. Nelson fouled out with more than seven minutes to play.
The Pipers played the second half without starters Sam Wiener and Kyle Foster, who were both called for technicals in the first half.
Both teams shot over 50 percent for the game with the Cobbers shooting 60 percent (25-42). Hamline shot at a 54 percent clip (29-54) and forced the Cobbers into 22 turnovers.
Gymnastics falls to Gustavus for first time this season
After beating the Gusties twice thus far in the season, the Pipers lost to Gustavus 177.075-174.0 in dual meet action Friday night in St. Peter, Minn.
The Gusties beat the Pipers in three of the four events, with Hamline winning the uneven bars 43.15-41-725. Junior Suzanne DuBois paced the Pipers in the uneven bars, posting an 8.775.
The Pipers scored highest in the balance beam, where the team tallied a score of 44.225. Senior Melanie Axvig led the way with a 9.2. Junior Renae Stinar added a score of 9.0.
Hamline’s only other score over a 9.0 came in the floor exercise. Senior Kristin Driscoll scored a 9.125 in the event.
Seniors Stephanie Sasik and Ashley Calhoon each scored an 8.9 in the vault for the Pipers.
Men’s tennis downs Simpson but drops two other matches
Hamline defeated Simpson College 6-1 before falling to both Luther and UW-Eau Claire at the Luther Invitational two weekends ago in Decorah, Iowa.
The doubles team of juniors Ben Watkins and Jon Henning won all three matches over the weekend.
UST defeats women’s tennis
The Pipers were swept by St. Thomas 9-0.
