Students enter three-way race for top spot
Student congress presidential election is March 9
Evens-Mulé
Coming into the 2005-06 academic year, there will be a freshness that will arrive as Hamline University sees a first of its kind with a new female president. With a new administration, a great opportunity is provided to students to set precedent for the years to come. Together, we will provide an open slate to fill with fresh new ideas. We are up-to-date with the issues and concerns of the current campus climate and well-involved in the diverse spectrum of campus activities. We ask for your support and ideas, so that we can be the link that pushes the full potential of Hamline University to be student centered, provide a diverse liberal arts education, and allocate support for every individual student.
John, an advocate for the arts, has been involved in recent productions such as The Duchess and is a host for HUTV. He understands a non-HUSC student’s difficulty and reluctance with HUSC and is a valuable resource because of that. Shanelle is currently the HUSC treasurer and has sat on the Economic Affairs Committee for the past two years. Her involvement also extends to the first-year orientation because of her position as a LEAD team member. She is in contact with administration because of that and her push for a student representative on the Board of Trustees.
In our eyes, there is only one main reason for HUSC’s existence: representation. The goal is that simple and does not need any fluffy language. Because of that, our main push is a student representative on the Board of Trustees. Representation will be used to help all areas of campus, including the lack of funding for great resources including the MISA Office, a re-evaluation of the Hamline Plan, and improvements in technology.
As Hamline’s commitment to diversity continues to be a matter of urgency, we will:
• Accelerate the push for racial, cultural, sexual, gender, political and spiritual diversity by bringing students together to not only dialogue and hear each other’s voices, but also to join in a movement of all students to force the administration to re-evaluate diversity issues
•Hold forums with MANY student opinions, faculty, and administrators to get VOCAL feedback and evaluation of the Hamline Plan.
• Aggressively invite the Board of Trustees to HUSC meetings and student activities.
• Set many examples of students’ drive for accessibility on campus by physical improvements so all
students can participate in campus activities
We are committed to making Hamline accessible for all students. We view the lack of access to buildings for disabled people as a form of discrimination and will be pushing for reforms in order to make Hamline a place all people can attend.
We will make it a priority to address women’s issues on campus. The campus must be safe for every person. . We will work with the WRC, FMLA and other organizations concerned with this issue in order to pressure the administration to confront it in a more appropriate manner and re-access the sexual misconduct with student input.
In order for Hamline to be a university of the future, we must address the issue of technology. We will push for expanded wireless Internet (that works properly) as well as for a more secure and efficient network for Hamline students to work on. We will also work to bring keyless access to all buildings as is now in the apartments and Drew Hall.
We intend to make HUSC a more comfortable environment for students outside of the organization. We intend to foster a peer relationship with students and other organizations, rather than one of power. The town hall meetings style will br used and will be less formal than HUSC general assembly and will allow all persons to have their chance to speak uninterrupted.
The areas of arts and athletics are vital parts of the Hamline community. We will work to promote these activities and bring them more exposure. We will also sponsor the first Arts-Athletics banquet in order to bring appreciation between these two expansive areas of interest.
Academically, we believe Hamline should always have an edge. But our class sizes are rising, our professors do not fairly represent the student body, and our classes have labels that do not correctly represent the class. Through our administration, we will have a tough outspoken member on the
academic affairs committee to do more than just discuss issues and shake the administration’s hands. The student voice can be heard, and seniors will actually get their diplomas at graduation!
Let’s not get stuck in the old, but instead, let’s start fresh and set new precedents. With this new administration, it is possible for HUSC to be a major line of communication to the “high-rollers,” a web of communication to student organizations, and the link that pushes Hamline University to be a student-centered, diverse, liberal arts institution for every student.
Pesko-Mann
Student Results
• Work with AAC to boost a quicker posting of final grades on Piperline.
• Include a line item in the HUSC budget to provide more money for intramurals.
• Lobby the administration for a faster response to current technology problems, including the lack of wireless Internet.
• Get the Safety and Security Committee back on its feet, with student representation, to help handle the ever-important task of ensuring protection on our campus.
• Continue to host athletic BBQs to recognize the accomplishments and listen to the concerns of our outstanding student athletes.
• Help entrench the Pesko-created Food Service Committee more permanently into the by-laws so that it
can continue the great work that the committee has done this year.
• Continue to be immediately responsive to both internal and external crisis, such as Pesko’s handling of the off-campus party crackdown and the tsunami disaster response.
Diversity / Social Awareness Initiatives
• Continue to be action-based, not word-based, supporting advocacy organizations by listening and acting on their concerns.
• Continue to nurture Mann’s strong relationship with the MISA Office and Multicultural Alliance, and Pesko’s affiliation with the Coalition for Social Change, working closely with these organizations in helping them obtain their and our goals.
• Continue Pesko’s work of opening the door for any political organization to become chartered, if they so choose, by creating inviting HUSC policies. This helps create and maintain an important, constant, and diverse political dialogue on campus.
• Formulate a diverse student selection committee to recommend qualified executive board candidates based on their all-encompassing campus experience.
• Work to constantly lobby HUSC and the administration in recognizing that “-isms” are very prevalent and need tackling, particularly with respect to accessibility on campus and creating a safe atmosphere for students of color and GLBT students.
Organizational Support
• Establish a hassle-free monetary fund that rewards a small but convenient amount of money to organizations for co-programmed events. Organizations can then spend that money on anything.
• Utilize Mann’s considerable organization experience to help all organizations reach their goals and purposes.
• Continue to provide every organization a coffee date opportunity. Communicate during these conversations how the various HUSC funds work, provide outside fundraising opportunities, and hear from you what you need from HUSC.
• Create a mandatory 24-hour response time to all HUSC executive board e-mails, helping to ensure a rapid-response HUSC for all, especially student organizations.
• Work especially close with umbrella organizations such as InterGreek Council, Multicultural Alliance, and Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) to best grasp how HUSC can be of help.
Internal HUSC Results
• Ensure efficiency and accountability with your $135 student fee. This can be done in part by providing online where every cent of YOUR student fee goes.
• Create accountability for all HUSC executive board members, requiring a formal review once a semester to ensure that they are doing their jobs and to determine whether or not their services warrant a stipend.
• Continue Pesko’s work in using Robert’s Rules in a manner that is fair and professional, yet non-intimidating and task-oriented.
External HUSC Results
• Appoint powerhouse student representation to administrative committees, such as the Academic Affairs Committee (AAC) and Cultural Diversity Committee. These committees are instrumental in shaping everything from dorm life to the classes we are offered.
• Be among the first to greet incoming president Linda Hanson and work to constantly inform her of student concerns from a CLA perspective.
• Take a hands-off approach toward the Student Media Board, allowing it to do its thing.
• Continue to update the students through excellent communication of what Hamline’s current problems are and what we are doing about them.
Nelson-Sheldon
Our purpose for running is that we are both deeply committed to providing a better experience for students. Student organizations are a catalyst for giving us communication skills, leadership training, and lifelong friends. It is the responsibility of the student government to promote and support student organizations č not only in their creation, and not only to give the organization a budget, but also to provide a good environment for communication between students. Why, then, is HUSC a place of back-biting, political maneuvering, hurt feelings, and empty promises? Why is it that the same people are always in HUSC, and when there is a change, people leave on negative terms? Why does HUSC ask for student organizations’ participation in what it does every Tuesday, but fails to attend the occasional event of a student org?
We believe that these are questions that too many students are asking of HUSC. This must change. We want to make HUSC a productive work environment while maintaining a positive atmosphere for student reps and orgs to foster a better Hamline experience with individuals who come from diverse backgrounds and views. In order to achieve this we must change the way the student body views HUSC.
The first step, but certainly not the final, would be to get HUSC involved in student orgs. To set the example, there would be a diverse, motivated, and committed exec board that would be working hands-on with student orgs.
Another step would be to ensure that the student body was properly informed of the issues facing HUSC.
Capital improvements and accessibly is a topic that repeatedly comes up; we would support any attempt to improve the accessibility of campus.
A dedication to service and volunteerism represents a few core values that we share, and, because of that, we want to considerably lower the stipend that some exec board members receive.
We want to continue the tradition of the coffee date with org leaders, but we don’t want to limit the meetings to just either the president or vice president.
We will encourage involvement from the reps, exec board members, and maybe some administrators.
We feel that with a new president of the university it is appropriate to have a new presidential team in student government. We are people who are not interested in politics but are interested in students and making campus a better place for everyone. The separation is clear between students, student orgs, and student congress, and what is worse is that separation is growing. We want to send a message to President Hanson when she takes office, and that message is: “We are a body of diverse, independent students who will work together to do all the good we can.”
