Senior Jeff Metzdorff named MIAC Track Athlete of the Week
Senior Jeff Metzdorff was named MIAC Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Metzdorff, from Wadena, Minn., set an NCAA provisional mark in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:48.62. Metzdorff’s race at Iowa State on Friday currently ranks him 10th on NCAA performance list.
Women’s tennis easily defeats Southwest State
The Pipers swept three doubles matches and won No. 1 through 4 singles to beat Southwest St. 7-2 Saturday night at the Walker Fieldhouse.
No. 1 singles and doubles player Kristen Bothun had a pair of wins.
She beat Sarah Hildebrandt in singles by the score of 6-3, 4-6, (10-7). She also won her No. 1 doubles match with teammate Hilary Wilson by the score of 8-3.
Junior Jenna McManus moved to 3-1 in singles matches with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Bethel cruises past Piper men’s basketball 88-77 in MIAC action
Bethel built up a 41-28 halftime lead en route to an 88-71 victory over the visiting Pipers.
The Royals started the game on an 11-2 run before Hamline countered with an unanswered 8-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 11-10.
Bethel would then go on to score 15 of the next 19 points to push the lead back to 12, and Hamline would get no closer than seven points the rest of the game.
Hamline was forced into 23 turnovers in the game, compared to 14 for Bethel.
Hamline’s Kyle Foster scored a career-high 17 points in the game, and his previous career best was set a week prior against St. John’s.
Brandon Aukes and Charlie Good each scored 14 points for the Pipers.
Bethel had four players score in double figures. Tim Gilbert led the Royals with 19 points, while Travis Jones tallied 16 points and eight rebounds. Tyson Bjorklund had 14 points; Matt Frederickson added 10.
Piper men’s basketball defeats St. John’s 80-67 in conference play
Hamline’s Brandon Aukes scored 19 points and Kyle Foster chipped in 13 points as the Pipers defeated the Johnnies.
Hamline, leading 31-24 at the break, shot 65 percent in the second half to stretch the lead to as much as 16.
Leading 49-46 with more than 10 minutes left in the game, Hamline went on a 21-8 run over 6:23.
The Pipers then held a 55-46 advantage of a three-point play by Aukes.
Aukes finished the game shooting 5 of 7 from the field and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. He also led the Pipers with seven rebounds.
Foster finished the game with 13 points, and Sam Wiener also chipped in 13 points. Paul Muenchow had 12 points in the contest.
Matt Ohme led St. John’s with 18 points, and Paul Henrichs added a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Craig Schafer tallied 10 points in the Johnnie loss.
Both teams shot better than 50 percent in the second half. Hamline shot 49 percent for the game, and the Pipers held an advantage at the free-throw line, where the team shot 24 of 32.
