St. Ben’s too strong for Piper women’s hockey
Hamline’s women’s hockey team was unable to hold off the St. Benedict Blazers on Friday, Feb. 11, as the Blazers found the net nine times with 28 shots on goal against the Pipers.
Sarah Horlitz scored the game’s first two goals in the first period, and Amanda Trusty added to the Blazer tally during the seventh minute of the game.
Hamline was able to cut the Blazer lead in half on Elysha Fuchs’ second goal of the season, assisted on a power play by Marie Gross and Sara Wagner. The assist was Wagner’s first collegiate point.
St. Ben’s retaliated with two more goals.
Senior Emily Gross added her eighth goal of the season at 10:57 of the second period to tally Hamline’s last goal of the night.
The two teams headed into the third period with a score of 6-2. The third period proved to be disastrous for the Pipers, as they allowed three goals on just eight shots on goal. Senior goaltender Alysha Huberty made 19 saves in the game in the 9-2 loss.
The Pipers again came up short Saturday night against St. Ben’s.
St. Ben’s struck first, but Hamline rebounded to score two goals in the second period and take the lead.
Elysha Fuchs scored her third goal of the season at the 7:10 mark of the second period to tie the game, with Allison Walsh providing the assist.
Hamline’s Emily Gross scored her ninth goal of the year at 18:59. Emily Dusold assisted, giving the Pipers a 2-1 edge heading into the second intermission.
However, the Blazers came back with four unanswered goals on nine shots in the third period, and
Hamline lost 5-2.
Hamline outshot their opponents 24-22, and senior goalkeeper Alysha Huberty made 17 saves in the game.
Emily Gross moved into second place on Hamline’s all-time scoring list with her pair of goals over the weekend.
Gross currently has 32 points (25 goals, seven assists) for her career. She needs one goal to tie Angie Erickson as Hamline’s all-time leading goal scorer.
The Pipers are back in action this Thursday against the Auggies. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
Hamline hosts Augsburg on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 4 p.m. The game will mark the Pipers’ last game.
