Sports Editor

Hamline’s Carolyn Korchik became just the seventh player in Hamline women’s basketball history to score 1,000 points as she scored 15 points in the Pipers 87-77 loss to Bethel on Feb. 16 to pass the 1,000 point barrier.

Korchik needed only one point to reach the milestone, and she got it on a three-pointer with just over 16 minutes left to play in the first half.

Hamline and Bethel exchanged the lead numerous times during the first half, with Hamline’s last lead of the first coming with 9:21 left on the clock. The Pipers led 25-24, but wouldn’t lead again till late in the second half.

Bethel went into the break with a 43-38 lead over Hamline, but the Pipers went on a 9-2 run in the opening minutes of the second.

Hamline led on two different occasions the rest of the game, but Bethel’s hot shooting ultimately crushed Hamline’s momentum.

Hamline cut the lead to 74-72 before Bethel ran away with the game.

The Royals shot 50 percent in the second half and Hamline shot 44 percent.

Bethel’s Jen Ahlberg scored 27 points in the game to lead all scorers, and Royal Heather Davis chipped in 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Hamline’s Laurisa Ewert led Hamline with 24 points, and Erin Petrich notched up 11 points in the contest.

St. Ben’s 79, Hamline 64

After leading 36-34 at halftime, Hamline was outscored 45-28 in the second half as St. Ben’s defeated the Pipers 79-64 in MIAC action.

Hamline’s Ashlee Senser scored 15 points, all in the first half, to lead the Pipers to a 36-34 lead at the break.

In the second half, Blazer Anna Heikenen proved to be the catalyst St. Ben’s needed as she scored 21 of her 35 points in the second half to lead the Blazers to the conference victory. She also grabbed 13 rebounds in the contest.

Korchik scored 23 and Piper Laurisa Ewert added 19 points, and Blazer Darby Noreen chipped in 13 points.
