Men’s hockey swept by St. Mary’s, outscored 8-3 in series
Hamline’s men’s hockey team came up short in their doubleheader against St. Mary’s.
The Cardinals defeated Hamline 4-1 on Friday, Feb. 11, in Winona, and again Saturday night, 4-2 at the State Fair Coliseum.
St. Mary’s struck first off a John Paul goal during the seventh minute.
The Cardinals increased their lead to 2-0 with a Jesse Polk goal with just over two minutes left in the period.
After the intermission, Cardinal Travis VanDynHoven added a third goal at the 3:54 mark.
Hamline junior Mike Forconi scored his second goal of the season on a power play to put the Pipers on the board. He was unassisted on the play.
Hamline was outshot in the contest 38-19, and Piper goaltender John Harstad made an impressive 34 saves in the 4-1 loss.
Saturday night was another difficult day for the Pipers.
Cardinal Chad Damerow scored the game’s first goal at the 14:34 mark of the first period on a power play.
In the eighth minute of the second period, he added his second goal, pushing the St. Mary’s lead to 2-0.
St. Mary’s added another goal during the third period.
Hamline senior Lubos Taragel scored his seventh goal of the season at the 7:30 mark. The shorthanded, unassisted goal brought the score to 3-1.
Cardinal Adam Fingerhut scored St. Mary’s final goal of the night at the 16:27 mark of the final period.
With three seconds remaining, after a fight broke out, Piper Jason Anderson added Hamline’s second goal.
Hamline’s Harstad made 33 saves on the night in the loss.
The Pipers are currently 4-17-0 overall and 1-11-0 in the MIAC.
Hamline’s only conference win of the season came on Jan. 21 against Gustavus.
The home MIAC win ended in a 4-3 decision in favor of the Pipers.
The Pipers are back in action Friday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m., when they travel to Bethel for their final series of the season.
Hamline hosts the Bethel Royals on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. for the final game of the season.
Bethel is currently 6-5-0 in the MIAC and 13-7-0 overall.
