Anderson sets school record in 5000-meter; Metzdorff may head to national competition
At the “Meet of the Hearts,” the Hamline men’s and women’s track teams recorded an impressive 24 personal bests, three provisional national qualifying marks, and a new school record.
Hamline competed against Macalester and Carleton at Carleton’s indoor track.
“We had a pretty good meet,” said men’s coach Paul Schmaedeke, who expressed his excitement about the national qualifying marks, as well as the four school records produced this indoor season.
Women’s team
Leading the women’s team was junior co-captain Keidra Anderson, whose 5000-meter run provisionally qualified her for the national meet and put a new school record on the books.
Anderson won the 5000-meter in a time of 17:52.41, which bested the second-place finisher by more than two minutes. Her time also made her the new Hamline school record holder for the 5000-meter distance.
Also performing strongly in the distance events were sophomore Lacee Schrupp, with a 11:15.91 first-place finish in the 3000-meter run, and first-year Sara Burns, with a personal best in the 800-meter run.
Burns placed second in her event.
Both Sara Warnke (5000-meter) and Melissa Francis (1000-meter) had their best races of the season.
Sophomore Amanda Jones made improvements in the weight throw, while co-captain Danielle St. Louis set a personal best in the long jump.
The women’s team aims to climb up in the conference rankings, but carries a disadvantage due to the small size of the team.
Host Carleton won the meet with 126 points; Macalester was second with 119. Hamline notched up 74 points.
Men’s team
The men’s team won their meet with strong contributions and personal bests from many team members in distance, sprints, jumps and throws.
Hamline won the meet with 144 points, Macalester was second with 115 points, and host Carleton placed third with 103 points.
Co-captain Jeff Metzdorff provisionally qualified for nationals in the 5000-meter run with a time of 14:48, less than one second behind the school record.
Metzdorff’s performance also garnered him “Track Athlete of the Week” honors from the MIAC office.
Jake Kruger also hit the provisional qualifying mark in the pole vault, with a height of 15-2 .
Ben Ganske had a big week with wins in both the 55-meter and 200-meter dash.
A slew of runners achieved personal bests: Shawn Smith (400-meter), Lars Seljevold (600-meter), Tony
Klappa (1000-meter), Travis Bristow (5000-meter), Aaron Smith (200-meter), Paul Comery (800-meter),
Brandon Gleason (3000-meter), and Josh Piotrowski (3000-meter).
The core of Jake Courrier and co-captain Ralph Rosario in the 35-pound weight throw have also done well this season. Both have set school records and are looking to qualify for nationals.
The Pipers have started strong this season and look to place near the top of the MIAC conference, improving toward the beginning of the outdoor season.
Metzdorff credits the team’s success to “the hardest-working team I have ever been associated with,” and said that “the hard work is really starting to pay off.”
The men and women’s indoor conference meet is scheduled for March 4 and 5 at Concordia.
