Letter to the Editor: Clarifying Hamline’s AP/IB policies
The “Advanced Placement” article in the Feb. 8 Oracle contained several inaccurate statements that warrant clarification. Before we do so, however, we wish to emphasize that our office strives to provide accurate, timely, and professional advising.
We enjoy working with students and welcome their questions about a variety of academic matters. It is in that spirit that we offer the following information:
(1) AP/IB credit information is posted on the Admission website, which specifies whether courses are granted equivalency for Hamline courses or given elective credit. More in-depth information is included also in the First-Year Registration and Graduation Requirements booklet. Every student who commits to attending Hamline University receives this book in his/her registration materials; there is also a version for transfer students. As an illustration, the booklet sent to members of the fall 2004 first-year class stated that students who received AP/IB English composition credit had the following options for fulfilling the first-year writing requirement:
Take a writing-intensive FYSEM.
Take ENG 1110, Writing and Reading Texts.
Further, the booklet specifies that with either of these options, students would also receive credit for their AP/IB English course.
Appropriate university staff and faculty review this policy on an annual basis. In prior years, students with AP/IB English credits had a third option (also stated in the First-Year Registration and Graduation Requirements booklet), which was to complete one of two upper-level English writing courses to replace English 1110. This option was eliminated after fall 2002.
(2) Intent to Graduate forms are submitted to Student Administrative Services (SAS), not Academic Services. Intents are due approximately one year before graduation, in order to give students time to complete all requirements. SAS staff evaluate each Intent carefully and e-mail an evaluation to each student. Students themselves, however, are ultimately responsible for making sure that requirements have been satisfied.
Staff members in the Office of Undergraduate Admission and the Center for Academic Services take great care to disseminate this information accurately. We regularly consult the published materials referenced above as well as other published materials to verify the accuracy of our advice.
It is our hope that the information contained in this letter has helped to address and clarify the important issues raised in the Feb. 8 article.
