HIRC medallion found by lucky four in Bush Library
The Hamline Inter-Residence Council’s (HIRC) medallion, hidden in an international relations textbook in Bush Library, was found last Wednesday by a team of first-year students.
The medallion guarantees the finders first room selection for the 2005-06 academic year. Jonathan Beauchane and his team, consisting of Blake Lindevig and Jon Klocek, found the medallion after the fourth clue was released.
HIRC president Jon Guyer said the medallion’s location was chosen by the five senior members of HIRC.
Eventually, the group decided to hide it in Bush Library. Guyer taped the medallion in his textbook from professor Karen Vogel’s International Organizations class and filed it on the library’s third floor.
Guyer even created a fake record for the book in CLICnet, the library catalogue that connects local cooperating colleges and universities. He give the textbook the call number HU 1854.
Beauchane said he was searching the catalogue for “medallion,” but never found anything. On Wednesday, he did the same search, limiting the parameters to return only items at Bush Library. The book was the seventh selection.
“My heart skipped a beat,” Beauchane said.
After locating the book on the third floor and finding the medallion inside the textbook, the group left the library, eventually returning, only to find groups roaming the third floor, and Guyer, who they informed of their success.
During their previous fruitless searches, the group looked behind Sundin Music Hall and the Hamline Plaza near the Bishop, as well as myriad other places.
“We left no bush unturned,” Lindevig said.
Beauchane said each roommate spent about five to six hours searching throughout the four days, besides Grupe, who said he spent about one hour, due to classwork and baseball.
Beauchane has already been offered $500 in exchange for the first selection; however, he said someone would need to offer $1,000 to each group member for the top draw.
Beauchane said he plans to select Manor 401, known as “the tower,” and will invite Lindevig, Klocek and friend Jayden Grupe to live with him next year.
