Men’s track starts indoor season with records; eyes success in conference championships
Hamline University’s men’s track team has two goals this season: Be the best team they can be at the
outdoor conference meet in May, and send as many athletes to the national championships as possible.
Senior co-captains Dave Brosnahan, Ralph Rosario, and Jeff Metzdorff will be looked to lead the Pipers back into the upper regions of the conference.
Each one of these athletes will be looked upon to score points and carry the team with their leadership and experience.
Brosnahan looks to improve on his seventh-place finish in the decathlon in 2004, and Rosario looks to continue his dominance in the discus and hammer.
Metzdorff placed 67th at the cross-country national championships this past fall and also scored in the 5,000-meter (third) and 10,000-meter (sixth) runs last track season.
He will be supported by a strong group of distance runners that include Tony Klappa and Chris Lutz, among others.
Klappa was fifth (seventh indoors) in the 1,500-meter run, and Lutz was seventh in the 5,000-meter run.
Rosario and Jake Courrier lead a solid group of throwers that should see much success this season.
Courrier set the school record in the 35-pound weight throw this season at a meet in Mankato and broke a record that was only two weeks old, set by Rosario.
Courrier set the mark of 52 feet 1/2 inches breaking the two-weekold record of 51-3 1/2 set in the first meet of the season by Rosario.
Hamline’s spring group will be led by Adam Lehner, Shawn Smith, Grant McDonald, and Mankato State University transfer Ben Ganske.
The Pipers will also have to fill the void left by graduated senior Will Sallee, who single-handedly won three outdoor events last year.
As always, Hamline hopes to have success indoors, but their main focus is peaking and doing their best when it comes to the outdoor conference championships in May.
The Pipers will next compete on Saturday, Feb. 19, in the St. John’s Invitational in Collegeville, Minn.
