Women’s hockey beats St. Kate’s for first time

Staff Writer

The women’s hockey team had yet another record-setting series this season against St. Kate’s, where the Pipers took three of four points in a series for the first time in school history.

Coach Garnet Asmundson said he was pleased with his team’s weekend performances.

“When you work hard in a struggle, it is a good feeling to have positive things come out of that,”
Asmundson said.

On Feb. 5, Hamline earned a 3-3 overtime tie against St. Kate’s.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the first period, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead, but Hamline was able to counter with two goals. Allison Walsh scored her second goal of the season during the 13th minute, and Emily Dusold netted her third goal of the season at the 16-minute mark.

During the second period, the Wildcats scored two unanswered goals to reclaim the lead.

Hamline was outshot 31-13 during the first two periods, but they would prove to reconcile themselves during the third period and overtime.

The Pipers struck early in the third period, tying the game with an Andrea Davis goal at the 3:05 mark.
Throughout the rest of the third period and the following overtime, the Pipers dominated the Wildcats and outshot their opponents 17-6.

“The team played hard and worked hard together,” Asmundson said of the game. Hamline’s 3-2 win over the Wildcats Friday night set the school record for conference wins in a season and marked the first time the women’s hockey team has ever beat St. Kate’s.

Mindy Lein opened scoring Friday night with her fourth goal of the season off a rebound at the 13:43 mark of the first period.

The Wildcats tallied two goals against the Pipers in the second period to grab the lead.

Early in the third period, Hamline tied the game off Holly Wiborg’s first goal of the season, a one-timer in front of the crease off a pass from Elysha Fuchs.

Then, just over one minute later, Hamline took the lead when Emily Toenes connected with Mindy Lein who scored her second goal of the night č the game winner.

On the weekend, goaltender Rachael Young provided her team with consistent leadership, making the right saves and stopping 59 shots.

Hamline will face St. Thomas on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7:00 p.m.

They will then travel to St. Thomas on Feb. 18 to take on the Tommies. The puck drops at 7 p.m.

Hamline will then play at Augsburg on Thursday, Feb. 24, and will host the Auggies on Saturday, Feb. 26.
