Letter to the Editor: Letter about professor was unfair, incorrect

I am writing this letter in response to a letter to the editor printed in the Dec. 7 edition of the Oracle. I am an Asian-American student, and I am upset about what was printed in Maisue and Colin’s letter.

I believe that everybody is entitled to his or her opinions, but I don’t feel that anybody has the right to unfairly and publicly slander a professor’s good name in order to make his or her point. I also feel that writing a letter to the editor of the Oracle was not the best way to go about addressing the issue.

The information printed in the letter told only half the story. The truth is, these students failed to mention the fact that they went to a Jewish professor and told him that the Holocaust should not be addressed in his Racial and Cultural Minorities class because they felt that the Holocaust was not an issue of race. The
Holocaust may not have been an issue of race, but the Jewish people are definitely considered to be a cultural minority.

I hope that Maisue and Colin’s letter does not keep students from taking classes with Professor Markowitz because he is a wonderful person and an amazing professor. He challenges his students to think critically about different social issues, and I assure you that his classes will open your eyes to new and different ideas. The key is to go into his classes with open minds and be prepared to discuss issues and ideas that you may not agree with.

I mean no disrespect to Maisue or Colin, because I do have a great respect for both of them and the efforts they are both taking to make changes for people of color on this campus.
