HIRC brings back medallion hunt
Back from a two-year hiatus, the HIRC medallion hunt has returned to campus. The medallion guarantees the finder first room draw for fall semester 2005, HIRC president Jon Guyer said.
Clues will be released on a daily basis at 4:00 p.m. and will be posted on a bulletin board in the student center.
The contest began on Feb. 10 and runs through today, although it will continue if the medallion isn’t found. Guyer said the medallion should be found by today, when the fifth and final clue is released.
The previous medallion was lost in March of 2003, when it was hidden underneath the back steps of the president’s house.

Feb Formal to be held at Solera
Feb Formal shed its skin this year. Now called Fireball, it will be held at the Solera Restaurant and Event Center in downtown Minneapolis on Feb. 19, said HEAT president Shannon Malone.
On the menu this year are tapas, or “small plates.” Tapas is a Spanish dining tradition that encourages tasting and sharing a variety of foods, according to Solera’s website.
Malone said HEAT chose Solera to explore other options and venues. In past years, Feb. Formal has been held in the RiverCentre in downtown St. Paul.
Dinner tickets are available until Wednesday, Feb. 16, and dance tickets until Friday, Feb. 18. They are available daily from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the student center and from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Sorin dining hall. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

HUSC elections draw near
Beginning on Feb. 23, HUSC hopefuls will begin littering the campus with campaign flyers in every color, promoting themselves for the upcoming March 9 elections.
All elected representative positions, including the president and vice-president slots, are up for re-election.
Political Affairs Committee chair Mike Mitchell said very few applications have been turned in. However, he said, he expects most candidates to file applications closer to the Feb. 18 deadline.
As in previous years, HUSC will hold informal and formal debates for all presidential candidate teams.
This year, class representative candidates will be allowed about a minute-and-a-half during the formal debates to talk about their platform, Mitchell said. This time was not reserved at last year’s formal debate.
While the voting process has not changed since last year’s balloting, Mitchell said the polls will be open longer to encourage a larger turnout.
“I want a big enough turnout so that the voting actually matters,” he said.
Students wishing to run for HUSC representative positions can get more information by contacting Mitchell or going to the HUSC office in the basement of the student center, next to the HUB.
The informal debate for president and vice-president candidate teams will be held Thursday, March 4, at 7 p.m. in room 100E of the Learning Center. The formal debate will take place March 7 at 8 p.m. in Sundin Music Hall. Both debates are free and open to the student body.
