Hamline women’s hockey earns first-ever win over Concordia with a 3-2 victory

Staff Writer

While Hamline students relaxed during J-Term, the women’s hockey team continued to work hard and put forth their best effort.

Though they didn’t enjoy much success on the scoreboard (1-6 over the break), their win over Concordia was record-breaking.

In Moorhead against Concordia, the Pipers struck first and early just 1:13 into the first period off Andrea Davis’ first career goal. Emily Dusold and Marie Gross provided the assists. Before the five-minute mark, Elysha Fuchs scored her first career goal to lift the Pipers to a 2-0 lead.

Cobber Paige Stone cut the Piper lead in half with a goal 3:28 into the second period, but Hamline responded at 8:48 with Dusold’s third goal of the season. The teams headed into the third period with Hamline leading 3-1.

Concordia was able to pull within one goal again during the fourteenth minute of the third period, but that was as close as they would come. During the contest Hamline was out shot 46-23, but junior goaltender Rachael Young had a stellar game, making 44 saves to preserve the victory.

The win over Concordia was the first time the Hamline women’s hockey team has beat Concordia, and it tied Hamline’s record for number of conference wins in a season. With this positive note already, the Pipers also believe they can capture a couple more wins against St. Kate’s and St. Ben’s before the season ends.

Coach Garnet Asmundson said he wants the team to work hard until the last day while becoming more successful competitively. He hopes the season ends on a good note, especially for his three seniors, Emily Gross, Alysha Huberty, and Regina Voracek, so they can see that their four years of commitment got the team on the right track and so that their senior year is their most successful season.
