Men’s hockey wins twice in January, victorious over St. Scholastica and MIAC’s Gustavus
During the frigid cold of January, Hamline’s men’s hockey team was hard at work. Though they didn’t come out on top in terms of wins and losses (2-6 during the month), they put together some great efforts and were able to edge Gustavus in an exciting game.
After a back-and-forth second period, the Pipers jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Off a slapshot that bounced between both posts before going in, Shane Wagner scored the first goal of the game (his second of the season) just 2:34 into the period. Senior Steve Malke added to the tally 10 minutes later. At the 15-minute mark, the Gusties were able to cut the score in half, but Piper Ryan Manke answered on a power-play goal two minutes later. The Gusties were able to net one more goal to make the score 3-2 heading into the final period of play.
Opening the scoring during the third period was Gustie Keith Detlefsen at 7:51, when he was able to fire a shot past the Hamline goaltender. However, Hamline had the last word on the ice. With the score tied at 3-3, first-year Jason Anderson skated up the left side of the ice and fed Matt Tonjum on a 2-on-1. Tonjum fired a wrister that deflected off Gustie starting goaltender Brett Sawyer and ricocheted into the net. It was Tonjum’s second goal of the season.
Senior goaltender John Harstad also came up big for the Pipers, stopping 40 shots for the win, which was also the Pipers’ first conference win under first-year head coach Chris Brown.
Games like these are what Coach Brown highlights when he says “given our depth, we are overachieving.” He says the team is controlling the things they can control and playing their butts off: “If you play so you can hold your head high, even if you lose, you’ll feel good.” Looking toward the rest of the season, the Pipers know they will not make playoffs, but they are looking to continue to play disciplined hockey, improve statistically, and hopefully win another conference game.
The Pipers are back in action Friday, Feb. 11, when they travel to take on St. Mary’s.
