Sports EditorSenior Emily Gross scored four goals and added an assist to lead Hamline to a 6-2 win over Bethel in the Pipers’ first conference win since 2002.
Gross started the scoring for the Pipers (1-3, 1-3 MIAC) on a rebound goal at the 4:22 mark of the first period. Hamline would then extend the lead to 2-0 on Gross’ second goal of the night with a 2-on-1 wrist shot past Bethel’s goalie.
First-year Sara Mickelson added her first collegiate goal at 8:07 in the second period on another powerplay. Gross then scored her third goal at the 14:08 mark.
Bethel (1-4, 1-3) cut the lead to 4-1 with a Tamara Trenter goal, but Hamline quickly responded with a Emily Dusold goal, which was assisted by Gross and Emily Toenes.
Bethel’s Heidi Govednik scored in the third to bring the game closer, but Hamline’s Gross netted her fourth goal on the night on a power play. Hamline goalie Rachael Young made 28 saves in the contest, and Royal Kelly Moriaty stopped 23 shots in the loss.
The win was the first conference win for the Pipers since they beat Bethel on Feb. 16, 2002, when Hamline won 4-2.
With her performance, Gross tied the Hamline school record for goals in a game. Angie Erickson scored four goals against Chatham on Nov. 19, 2000. Gross was named MIAC Women’s Hockey Player of the Week for her efforts.
