Gustavus jumped out to a 41ą21 lead at the half while en route to an 80ą64 conference win over Hamline.

The Pipers (2ą2, 0ą1 MIAC), fell behind by 20 points in the first 20 minutes of play, shooting just 24 percent from the floor, while the Gusties shot 39 percent.

Gustavus (3ą1, 1ą0) would stretch their lead to 47ą22 with 18:52 left in the game before Hamline fought back with a 22ą4 run in the span of seven minutes.

The Pipers were able to shorten the Gusties’ lead near the last three minutes of play, but were hampered by foul trouble as the game drew to a close.

Hamline came within only eight points of tying the game in the rest of the contest.

Junior Kelly Lines led the Pipers’ scoring with 16 points, and Carolyn Korchik and Laurisa Ewert each finished the game with 13 points. Hamline’s other top performers were Erin Petrich, who scored 11 points and added four assists, while Andrea Eilertson had 10 rebounds for the Pipers.

Knights Lacy Skoog and Sara Boldt each chipped in 18 points for their team in the Gustavus victory.

A few nights prior to opening conference play, Hamline played a hard-fought game against UWąRiver Falls.

Hamline held a 68ą67 lead with just 43 seconds left in the game, but River Falls used two free throws by
Chantele Melgaard to take the lead. Hamline then turned the ball over. River Falls sank the first free throw to make the score 70ą68 and grabbed an offensive rebound after missing the second. In the final eight seconds of the game, Gina Astedt capped the game for the Falcons with a pair of free throws.

The Pipers controlled much of the game and led by as many as seven points with five minutes remaining, and even erased a five-point deficit with a 20ą8 run in the middle of the second half.

Lines scored 24 points and Korchik sunk nine in the contest, with Petrich chipping in seven.

Erin Effle of River Falls tallied 17 points, and teammate Miranda Biteler scored 16 for the Falcons.

Hamline entered the new season under the leadership of new head coach Melissa Young-Kruse. In her short stint at the helm of the Piper program, she has already coached her team to two record-setting performances.

Against North Central, Hamline broke the school record for points in a game, downing North Central by 71 points in a 118ą47 blowout. The previous record was set against St. Kate’s on Jan. 6, 2001, when Hamline won 105ą65. The Pipers also broke their largest margin of victory record with the win. The previous record was set only four days earlier in a 104ą45 win over Cornell.

After Hamline’s first two games of the season, the Pipers averaged 111.0 points per game. The Pipers led the conference in average points per game (111), average margin of victory (+65), field goal percentage (.540), offensive rebounds (22/game), rebounding margin (+18.5), assists (23/game), steals (19/game), turnover margin (+18), and three-point field goals made (10/game).

The Pipers are back in action at St. Kate’s on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
