HUSC is here for you. Just come to our meetings - you’ll see.
As the BER body, we understand that the way things are run at HUSC is not all that clear to most students, so we would like to make a suggestion to all current students to help you understand what HUSC is all about and how you can make changes in what happens here at this school.
The easiest way to understand and change things about HUSC and our university is to come to meetings.
Every student at this school is welcome to attend general assembly meetings. If your concern is heightened by another factor, you’re welcome to instead audit a committee meeting.
HUSC general assembly meets every Tuesday during convocation hour. This is the best opportunity for you to have your voice heard. Part of every undergraduate student’s tuition goes to HUSC, and every student who pays tuition has a vote in HUSC general assembly.
So come to HUSC and take advantage of your vote and your voice. You, as a member of the Hamline community, also have the opportunity to address issues that you feel are important to the Hamline community. Time is allotted at each meeting to address new business and other concerns.
Committee meetings are where most of the work of representatives is done.
The Economic Affairs Committee (EAC), which meets Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. in the back of the library, is a committee that was designed to handle organizations’ budgets, requests for funding, and other financial issues.
The Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meets Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in the fishbowl on the second floor of the GLC. It was created to deal with elections issues, organization reviews, and other legal issues.
The Public Relations Committee (PRC) is responsible for publicity of student organization events.
The Student Organization Committee (SOC) meets Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. in the Klas Center and was created to help charter new student organizations and to advocate for new and current student organizations.
The Coalition for Social Change (CSC) is the newest branch of HUSC and is designed to help promote diversity-based issues around Hamline and its community.
Feel free to contact your representative of HUSC or executive-board member and audit these meetings in order to gain a better understanding of how HUSC works, what HUSC does, and how to change the policy we work with on.
Another great way to get involved is by proposing ideas for the capital improvement fund. BER has been allotted $37,000 to put toward various physical projects to improve the quality of campus.
If any student has an idea as to how this money should be spent, they should contact a representative who will work with them toward getting it approved. Some examples of capital improvements from past years include the computer kiosks, DVDs, weight-room equipment, and almost anything that would potentially physically change Hamline.
The contingency fund is an account used as a resource for expenses that are not expressly covered by the budget or are unique. Any student can write a resolution to access this fund. All proposals must be brought to EAC and then the floor of HUSC.
The conference fund is an account used to help fund conferences for student organizations as well as individual students. Any student or HUSC-recognized organization may write a resolution to access this fund.
Recognized organizations and students must first go through EAC for approval, and then to the floor of HUSC. Consult the treasurer or EAC chair if you have questions about this process.
Also, if you have any questions about developing an idea or writing a resolution, please contact a representative. That’s why we are here. We hope to see all of you soon.
If you would like contact information for your representative or executive-board member, you can access our accounts at www.hamline.edu/~husc.
