Swim teams continue strong start with wins over St. Kate’s, St. Mary’s
Hamline’s swimming and diving teams continued their strong performances with recent wins over St. Kate’s and St. Mary’s.
The Hamline women’s team took eight of 13 races to defeat St. Kate’s by a score of 130-113.
Seniors Thyra Jagger and Adrianne Walls each won two events for Hamline. Jagger dominated the diving events, taking the one-meter d and three-meter dives with respective scores of 185.7 and 210.3.
Walls swept the distance freestyle events, winning the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:33.83 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:39.3.
The Pipers were also led by first-year Aly Janzen, who won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events in
respective times of 59.3 and 2:07.25.
First-year Dana Ketcher took the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.6, and sophomore Lindsey Swanson was first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:39.54.
The following day, the Hamline men’s team secured a dual meet victory over St. Mary’s in Winona.
The Pipers’ roster depth and experience helped lead them to the win over a much smaller St. Mary’s squad.
The win was also the first for the mean’s team under second-year head coach Andy Hanson and the first men’s victory in recent years.
“Our depth was going to win the meet for us no matter what, so we focused on individual performances and trying people out in some new events,” said Hanson.
Not only is the men’s roster up this year, but the women’s roster has swelled as well.
“We are definitely a bigger team than in the past, and it is a whole new feel for the team and for us in practices. Plus, the cheering on the pool deck is now much louder, so that’s always nice,” Hanson said.
Hamline’s increased numbers, as well as solid performances this season, should help the team move up in the MIAC, and by season’s end Hanson hopes his team can produce some national qualifiers.
The Pipers also hope to make a leap in the MIAC this year with an ultimate goal of placing as high as fourth.
“We’re right in the middle of the MIAC right now, but you still have these super teams of the MIAC that have rosters of 40 or more. But we’re picking away at them and sneaking some people in there during meets, and we should be stronger at the conference meet than last year come season’s end,” Hanson said.
McMahon named to All-MIAC women’s soccer frst team
Anna McMahon, a first-year midfielder from Stillwater, was recently named to the All-MIAC women’s soccer first team. McMahon led the Pipers scoring efforts with nine goals and four assists. The women’s soccer team finished the season with a record of 4-13-1.
