Football falls to Carleton in final season game; Pipers finish 1-7 in conference play
In their last game of the 2004 season, the Hamline football team came up short against the MIAC bottom-dweller the Carleton Knights, 14-7.
With the loss, the Pipers finished the season 3-7 overall and 1-7 in MIAC play.
On their second series of the game, the Knights (2-8, 1-7 MIAC) put together an impressive 10-play, 87-yard drive. In this drive, Carleton freshmen back R.J. Jackson had runs for 17 and 23 yards. Carleton quarterback Darren Caspers took it from there and scored the first touchdown of the game on a one-yard run.
The Knights were able to score once more in the first half on another one-yard run by Caspers.
The Hamline defense stopped the Knights once on the one-yard line and forced two Knight turnovers, which could have been potential scoring opportunities.
The second half turned into a defense battle that left both offenses struggling to get a strong drive going.
The Pipers got things rolling with 1:37 left in the contest when they put together a scoring drive of 74 yards, spanning 13 plays.
Sophomore quarterback Noah Rasmussen hooked up with junior receiver Josh Johnson on a 22-yard touchdown. After a successful extra point conversion, the Pipers cut the deficit in half.
After an unsuccessful onside kick, the Hamline defense shut down the Knights’ offense and forced them to turn the ball over on downs.
Through good clock management, the Pipers were able to break into Knight territory, but on the final play of the game, Rasmussen’s Hail Mary attempt was intercepted by Luke Muellerleile.
Sophomore Ben Dahmes led the Pipers in rushing with 34 yards on nine carries. Ben Ganske added to the Pipers rushing game with 31 yards on 12 carries.
Rasmussen threw 9-for-23, with 98 yards passing and one touchdown. Wide receiver Dan Ryks picked up 59 yards on five passes.
The Pipers head into the off-season with aspirations of improvement on their 2004 performance. With many hard workouts, the excellent recruiting of the coaching staff, and healthy players, the Pipers will be back in full force in 2005 to take on all MIAC competitors.
