Manke’s overtime goal lifts Pipers to 5-4 win
Senior Ryan Manke scored at the 1:09 mark of the overtime period to give Hamline hockey a 5-4 win against UW-Eau Claire on Nov. 6.
Hamline (1-1, 0-0 MIAC) took a 4-2 lead with a pair of goals in the second period.
Hamline took the lead on a Griffin Kilby goal at 4:53.
Eau Claire responded with their own goal by Rob Ouimette to tie the game at 1-1.
On a power play in the first period, Manke put away his first goal of the game at the 13:04 mark.
The Blugolds’ Dunleavy put a shorthanded goal past Hamline’s net-minder four minutes later.
The two teams played to a 2-2 tie at the end of the first period, and senior Steve Malke scored his first goal of the season at 13:39 to give Hamline a goal lead.
Two minutes later, junior Ben Gustafson scored his first goal of the season on a power play.
Eau Claire bounced back in the third period with two goals to force the overtime. Chip Dunleavy and
Dave Coleman each scored power-play goals for the Blugolds.
Hamline’s first overtime game of the year didn’t last long, as Manke quickly scored to secure the win for the Pipers. His second goal of the game helped give first-year head coach Chris Brown his first victory as the head of the Pipers.
Eau Claire outshot Hamline 42-39 in the game, but Hamline’s goalie John Harstad made 38 stopped shots in the contest.
Blugold goaltender Chris Nelson made 34 saves in the loss.
Hamline opened their season the night before the Eau Claire game in what turned out to be a 4-2 loss against UW-Stevens Point.
Stevens Point broke open a 2-2 tie in the third period to pass Hamline in a 4-2 win.
Stevens Point held a 33-27 edge in shots on goal for the game. Hamline’s Harstad made 29 saves, while
Jim Redpath stopped 25 shots for the win.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after two, but the Pointers’ Thom Vernelli scored a power-play goal at 12:00 of the third period to give Stevens Point (2-0) the lead.
The pointers added the final goal of the game at the 17:12 mark of the third on a Ryan Kirchoff power-play goal.
