Hamline demolishes Macalester in a 75-20 record-setting rout
The Piper football team retained the storied “Paint Bucket” award on Oct. 30 when they pummeled MIAC foe Macalester 75-20.
Of the 40 contests for the bucket, the Pipers have been dominant against the Scots, winning an amazing 37 times.
The Pipers got things going early against the Scots when senior quarterback Andy Gagnon found junior tight end Ryan Haws for a 49-yard touchdown, just two plays into the game.
Hamline set three single-game school records in the game: points in a game, with 75; touchdowns in a game, with 11; and total yards of offense, with 781.
“It was good win over our arch-rival,” said head coach Donavon Larson. “We played well and set a few school records in the process.”
Considering that Hamline football has a history of over 100 years of competition, this record-setting day
demonstrates just how commanding the Pipers were against the Scots.
Hamline’s previous records for points, yards, and touchdowns were also set against Macalester, in 1977.
The victory is the sixth straight meeting in which the Pipers have been victorious in what is Minnesota’s longest-running college football rivalry.
After losing to Ripon the following Saturday, Macalester fell to 1ą7 in MIAC competition,
The following week, a loss
The Pipers rode into St. Thomas the next weekend, hoping to keep momentum at a high level and stringing a couple of wins together.
But the outcome was not as the Pipers (3-6, 1-6 MIAC) had hoped, as the Tommies (7-1, 6-1 MIAC) knocked off the Pipers 41-14.
The Pipers were able to get things going early again, with an interception by senior linebacker Mike Walsh, followed by a touchdown run by quarterback Andy Gagnon.
This early lead diminished quickly, however, as Tommie kick returner Walter Dosh returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a St. Thomas score.
St. Thomas continued to roll throughout the contest, scoring 35 unanswered points against the Pipers.
Hamline’s second score came early in the fourth quarter when sophomore quarterback Noah Rasmussen rushed for a five-yard score.
Luck and time proved not to be on Hamline’s side, as St. Thomas would score one more time on a 32-yard interception return by defender Pat Sommerstad, which set the score at 41-14.
Noah Rasmussen led the Pipers in passing, throwing 11 of 16 for 119 yards, with three interceptions.
In the running game, Ben Dahmes rushed for 37 yards, while Gagnon had 36 yards on the ground.
Dan Ryks and Jeff Hanger led the Piper receiving core.
Ryks contributed four catches for 36 yards, while Hanger added two receptions for 28 yards.
With the end of the season, Larson said he wanted to thank his seniors for their dedicated effort and involvement with the Hamline football program.
Those seniors are Mike Van Loh, Dan Ryks, Mike Walsh, Andy Gagnon, Nick Keane, Mike Downs, Andy Buchanan, J.B. Peck, Josh Heasley, Ali Shouman, and Jake Bjerke.
