First-years, food rock GLC

Associate News Editor

Last week’s Fall Fair was a blur of posters, lights, food, and an abundance of other sights.
Designed to showcase the progress and achievements of the first-year seminars and the various academic departments, the fair was part of a larger event through the admission office, entitled “An Evening At Hamline.”

The Learning Center was packed to the gills with first-years, faculty, and prospective students, as well as many upperclassmen browsing the exhibits for free candy and food.

The offerings at the fair were diverse and vibrant, from finger-painting with the Winston Churchill FYSEM to a display of artifacts from the “Digging into Hamline’s Past” seminar. The variety of offerings from booth to booth made for a random grab-bag of academic offerings.

There were informational posters for the Environmental Studies Club, as well as information on the McHuevo, Maharaja Mac, and McLaks (a salmon offering from McDonald’s) at the global studies booth. Students blew bubbles with the “Race Matters” FYSEM and watched the physics department display their sometimes-shocking exhibits.

Another common attraction to the fair was the wide array of free cuisines. Participating students used an enticing smorgasbord of pizza, chicken nuggets, egg rolls, popcorn, pretzels, and soda to lure attendees to their booths.

There were lollipops from Counseling and Health Services, chocolates from Access Now, and caramels from Psi Chi. There were sweets at virtually every booth.

Whatever their reasons for attending, those who made their way to the Fall Fair last Thursday left the experience with a better understanding of Hamline’s various FYSEMs and departments, or, at the very least, a satiated stomach and a pocketful of candy.
