Men’s cross country places fifth at MIAC championships

Staff Writer

The men’s cross country, running through tough terrain, had a few ups and downs at the MIAC cross country championships last weekend.

The team on Saturday placed fifth out of 11 conference teams, and were a mere six points out of third place.

The Hamdogs were again led by top runner and junior Jeff Metzdorff.

Metzdorff finished fourth overall out of 184 runners, which earned him all-conference honor. He completed the eight-kilometer course in 26:44.

“Jeff ran a very smart, tough race,” head coach Paul Schmaedeke said.

Sophomore Tony Klappa received an honorable-mention award by placing 20th overall with a time of 27:48. Not far behind Klappa was Hamline’s third finisher, Dan Steinbrecher.

Steinbrecher finished 27th overall with a time of 28:05.

“Dan’s finish was one of the biggest surprises of the meet,” Schmaedeke said. “He really stepped up.”
Freshman Brandon Gleason, along with junior Ned Branigan, rounded out the top five runners for the Pipers. Gleason finished in 28:21, good for 39th overall. He was followed by Branigan, who placed 47th overall with a time of 28:29.

At last year's championships, the Pipers finished in sixth place.

The Hamdogs will get another chance at the Central Region meet to get after their conference foes, as well as other competitive regional teams. The meet will be held this coming weekend at Wartburg college in Waverly, Iowa.

The Pipers will take a shot in a very competitive region at placing in the top six teams, and Metzdorff is in prime position to go after an individual NCAA-championship berth.
