No students, no employment recruiters
This letter is in response to the Oct. 19 Oracle editorial. The editorial is interesting, but inaccurate. Plenty of employment opportunities exist for Hamline graduates now and into the foreseeable future. Our problem at Hamline is not a lack of opportunities, but a lack of students willing to apply.
Two weeks ago, Target Corporation recruited on campus for their executive team leader position. They recruit any major and were willing to fill multiple recruiting schedules. The starting pay is $38,000 per year.
Only four students signed up for an organization noted for operational excellence, innovation, and philanthropy.
How many Hamline students would feel burdened by tuition debt if they are earning $38,000 per year at graduation?
This week, General Mills was recruiting on campus.Once again, all majors are recruited. Sixteen of the 23 eligible who submitted resumes have been selected to interview. Why the difference in student response between Target and General Mills, both of which are top-ranked employers?
Professor Beth Gunderson cancelled a class and required her students to attend the General Mills presentation. Why is it that faculty must cancel class and cajole students into applying for well-paying and interesting jobs? Over the years Hamline has lost corporate, nonprofit, and government recruiters because of this pattern of insufficient student response. This is not the fault of anybody but the students themselves.
To make sure students were aware of these outstanding opportunities, the CDC attempted to call every senior at their current number and, if that was not available, their permanent number. Of those who answered, 37 percent told us not to call them again. Are we to conclude seniors don’t want to hear about great employment opportunities?
The Government Job and Internship Fair is Friday, Oct. 29.To date, 27 departments will be recruiting. The federal government, the largest employer in the United States, is anticipating a huge labor shortage in less than five years. This event is open to all students, not just seniors.
To date, only 22 Hamline students have registered to attend.Given Hamline’s commitment to public
service, 150 would be a more reasonable number.
Let me be clear. At Hamline, the number of recruiters on campus is determined by student response, not employer interest. How many internship and job recruiters would you like to see on campus?Campus recruiting is a partnership. CDC will do its part. Are you prepared to do yours?
Obtaining rewarding, satisfying employment requires a long-term commitment and ongoing activities similar to academic success.
In addition to making an appointment with a career counselor, I invite you to attend the following fall events:
Government Job and Internship Fair (Friday, Oct. 29)
Majors and Career Luncheons (Nov. 8 and 9)
Practice Interview Week (Nov. 15ą19)
Many opportunities exist for Hamline students to find rewarding employment. The CDC is committed to your success, but YOU have to participate, too.
