Editorial - the Oracle endorses Kerry

Just over three years ago, Hamline and the entire world were rocked by the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. As we watched the towers come down, we knew we were going to war. The United States demanded that Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban hand over bin Laden or face the consequences. The Taliban refused, and our bombs began dropping.

Two wars later, and America is still facing the consequences of our hegemonic arrogance and violent foreign policy. Over 1,000 American soldiers and literally countless Iraqi soldiers, insurgents, and innocents have now died in an unnecessary, uncalled for, and unjust war.

Back in Afghanistan the first democratic elections have been held, but much of the country’s territory is actually controlled by warlords. The Afghani people, who had been the first people chosen to receive our transformative gift of democracy, have been all but forgotten for another misadventure in the desert.

Iraq was our country’s second war in as many years. The utter incompetence with which the war was executed has only now, finally, come to light with the disappearance of 380 tons of high explosives-probably finding its way into the hands of terrorists and ex-Baathists, exploding in the car bombs hitting
Baghdad daily, and searing the young soldiers who give nothing short of their lives for their country.

In the midst of the international strife we have created for ourselves, our own economy has sputtered to a near standstill. Unemployment, economic insecurity, falling wages, and the sinking dollar have families rightfully wondering if they will be able to pay the bills. Students wonder if they’ll be sent off to die when the jingoistic and unreal policies that guide our nation necessitate the instatement of a military draft.

All the while, George W. Bush has done absolutely nothing positive or productive to solve the problems of our nation or our world. Rather, he has done everything in his power to destroy everything that America once stood for. He has violated our rights to privacy, as well as freedom of speech, religion, and association, with borderline-fascist legislation like the Patriot Act. He has terrorized the peoples of two nations and has turned the entire globe against us. He has destroyed Life en masse, has whored out Liberty to corporate interests, and has turned America’s Pursuit of Happiness into a Pursuit of Power.

And this man has the gall to ask for a second term as president of the United States of America.

Our world has come to the brink of ruin, and we have one man to blame. But it’s not all his fault. It’s your fault and it’s my fault. It’s your mother’s fault and your grandfather’s fault. We the people have allowed this man to lay waste to nearly all of our common values, such as decency, honesty, and compassion. We the people have made war on two sovereign nations and killed thousands of innocents. We the people have committed unendingly stupid mistakes and have refused to acknowledge them, let alone correct them or try to do better.

But we the people have a choice to make today. We have a choice to make and we must make it well.

Otherwise, the blood of thousands more will be on our hands-all of our hands-and that is something that our forever proud, strong, and ethical nation cannot stand for.
