Votergasm - Making voting sexy again

Editor in Chief

Sometimes convincing 20-something denizens to vote takes a more quirky, modern approach then the tired charges of responsibility and obligation offered by average politicians.

And what’s more convincing then sex?

Votergasm.comčthe brainchild of Oxford graduate Liz Gately and a brigade of her Ivy League friendsčis a website devoted to registering citizens and asking them to take the Votergasm pledge, which includes having sex with voters on election night and withholding sex from non-voters.

More than 25,000 have made the pledge.

The site’s off-kilter mission statement is this: “To vote. To have sex. To experience ... a Votergasm.”

Votergasm has drawn national press, most conspicuously from Rush Limbaugh, who argued the group is encouraging “orgasms and sex for votes for Kerry.”

The site says it’s non-partisan, and it’s a claim easy to believe, based on a significantly higher proliferation of the panty-clad and shirtless than of the donkeys or the elephants.

This site is about sex. And also about voting, and about Votergasm’s bizarre arranged marriage between the two.

The Votergasm pledge is divided into three levels: citizen, patriot, and American hero. The citizen level simply pledges to withhold sex from non-voters for the week following the election. The patriot level pledges to do the same, as well as have sex with a voter on election night.

And the American hero level, predictably enough, is the most regimented.

Heroes pledge to have sex with a voter on election night and withhold sex from non-voters for the next four years.

Other site resources include “Action Pictorials,” racy photo storyboards on how-to subjects such as “How to contact your elected officials” and “How to start an issue advocacy group.”

And then there’s the “Ass or Trunk?” section, designed similar to the popular “Hot or Not” website, where users are allowed to view a photo and vote as to whether the photo’s subject is a dedicated Democrat or a staunch Republican. And like the “Hot or Not” site, photos range from the quizzical grandmother to the unassuming fisherman to the long-haired, shy-smiling, tie-dye T-shirtąwearing college boy.

If none of the above options are decadent enough for your discerning taste, access the “mailbag” link, where spokeswoman Michelle Collins fields questions from fans and criticsčmostly from the latterčregarding sexy photos, seizures, voting, and, of course, sex.

So if you pledge today, keep in mind the basic guidelines of the organization: “Pledge-fulfilling sex must be consensual, legal, and generous. And hot.”
