White-power group uses music to spread racism
On the Project Schoolyard USA section of the Panzerfaust website, bold letters proclaim a bold mission statement: “Panzerfaust: We don’t just entertain racist kids, we create them.”
Project Schoolyard USA is a CD sampler on Panzerfaust, a white-power record label based in Newport, Minn., and it’s one of the fastest-growing of its kind. Byron Calvert, one of Panzerfaust’s co-owners, said, “Our sales have doubled in the last year and a half, and we don’t see them slowing down.”
The name “panzerfaust,” German for “iron fist,” comes from the name given to a hand-held anti-tank
weapon used by Nazi Germany in WWII that was used against enemy armored vehicles. According to the
Panzerfaust website, the name was chosen because “the spirit of the weapon and those who employed it are forever embodied in [their] racial psyche.”
The Panzerfaust label is comprised of artists who describe themselves as pro-white. These artists, which include bands such as Force Fed Hate and Midtown Bootboys, believe that the root of violence in America stems from the interaction of the races.
“White kids have to listen to black rappers saying things like, ‘Kill the white people, but make sure they buy our albums first’,” Calvert said. “There is a growing number of kids across the country who are extremely perceptive of this and are pissed off about it.”
Calvert said that racism is natural because, in his mind, there has not been a single successful multiethnic culture throughout history. He said that, although European history is full of ups and downs, there were times when people felt safe and were able to lead productive lives. According to Calvert, there is a growing number of white youth who are realizing this and who are also tired of being forced to interact with other cultures.
Panzerfaust, he said, is a place where white youth can musically express their hate of multiculturalism. Calvert said he became a part of the white-power movement when he was in high school.
“My girlfriend at the time called me, and told me to turn on Oprah. Oprah had on Tom Metzger, a leading white-power author. The next day, after seeing him speak, I shaved my head. I know now that was not the right way of going about it.”
Instead of shaving their heads and tattooing their bodies with symbols of white power, Panzerfaust’s goals is to reach the youth of America through musical means only, differing from what previous white-power groups have done. This is all done with the hope of drawing less attention from anti-hate groups who want to silence their voices.
According to turnitdown.org, there are hundreds of white-power bands and record labels across the country. They spread throughout all fifty states, and the site echoes Calvert’s claim that these types of bands are growing in number.
Panzerfaust’s recent campaign revolves around free distribution of copies of the Project Schoolyard USA CD. The label hopes that by passing out the pro-white sampler near high schools, they will be able to share their message with other white youth who feel similarly, but haven’t yet been able to find an outlet.
The project is modeled after an attempt by a German white-power label at distributing 100,000 CDs to school-aged children. Only 25,000 reached the hands of young Germans, because the country forbids the production of hate music. Panzerfaust claims they have already disturbed 20,000 CDs across this country in only two weeks, with plans to reach the German group’s original goal.
At this point the label has remained fairly secretive. There is no address listed on the website, and Calvert was cagey when asked about his location.
He has a Panzerfaust e-mail address and a PO box in Newport, which is about 15 minutes south of St. Paul.
