*Letter to the Editor* Shoo, fly, from my overpriced sandwich
I am writing to the Oracle in deep concern for the health and welfare of the students and staff of Hamline University. After reading an editorial and article about the HUB food center and our new and very expensive Klas Center, I have felt compelled to come forward with my own concerns and reservations.
On Oct. 14, I entered the Hub in hopes of purchasing a meal that wouldn’t cost me an arm and a leg (unlike our Klas Center). One other expectation that I had was that the food and beverages that are available to me and others were being sold in a sanitary and healthy condition.
As I waited in line for a grilled cheese sandwich, I noticed many flies flying around, landing on exposed food (cookies, condiments, cheese, lettuce, etc). With a frown, I accepted my sandwich, and made my way down to the register, and noticed that there were even more flies inside of the bakery case that housed donuts and scones for sale.
I also noticed that the case was filthy inside, and probably wasn’t being cleaned out, as Minnesota health codes surely stipulate. I have worked in the food industry for many years and that kind of unsanitary and dangerous sale of food was never permitted where I worked. Ever.
As a student and resident on campus, I (like many others) depend on receiving nutrition from our food services, and think that this is unacceptable and disgusting, and want to see this problem taken care of, post-haste. If this means that health services need to come by and randomly check our facilities, so be it. I will be the one to make this call.
We deserve only the highest level of service and quality from Hamline and Aramark food services, in exchange for the ridiculous prices we pay to eat and learn. For those of you that are clamoring to have your beloved HUB open more business hours--I implore you to also demand that you have a healthier and more sanitary HUB as well.
I urge all students and staff to look very closely at their food service options, and to be very wary of what kind of unhealthy and downright dangerous circumstances they are procuring their food from. It is one thing to charge an exorbitant amount for a sandwich or other item at Klas or the HUB--but shouldn’t we in turn expect only the highest regard for sanitation and health in return?
