St. Olaf outlasts women’s soccer in 1-0 win; team hit hard by Carleton College

Staff Writer

Despite being outshot 15-10, the Pipers were able to hold St. Olaf to a 1-0 win during 90 minutes of well-played soccer last Tuesday.

The lone goal came off Ole Kelsay Watt, who scored 21:18 into the first half to lead her team over Hamline.

Hamline (3-8-1, 1-4 MIAC) had a chance late in the game to convert a goal on a conner kick in the last 20 seconds of play, but time ran out on the clock before the Pipers could get a shot off.

Piper goalkeeper Betsy Seal made seven saves in the game for Hamline, and Ole goalkeeper Anna Feigum made two saves for the shutout win.

The Pipers also fell short when they took on Carleton just over a week ago, falling to the Knights 4-0.

Kathleen Ward opened the scoring in the fourth minute as she finished a ball that was played into the box off of the first of the Knights’ five corner kicks.

Next, Martha Polk was able to head home a Lisa Driscoll cross to make the score 2-0 at half-time.

The Knights would score two more goals in the second half coming from Erica Bolan and Dylan Welch.

Piper goalkeeper Betsy Seal made 10 saves in the contest.

Coach Englund highlighted senior co-captain Vanessa McClellan and first-year player Christine Feely as two key players in their Carleton game.

McClellan played three different positions and put forth a really good effort, and she “always plays tough,” Englund said.

Of Feely, Englund commented that she “had a solid game and tackled well. No one plays through her.”
With the loss, the team was beginning to see the wear and tear of the season as far as injuries go.

Englund noted that “several key players are hurting and worn down” from the hard season, which is a concern for the remainder of the year. Fortunately, the Pipers came back and were able to work hard in practice, so they can continue to improve.

The Pipers travel to Martin Luther College for a game on Oct. 19, and then go to Augsburg the following day. Game time for the Augsburg game is set for 5 p.m.
