Men’s cross country storms past St. John’s University
Men’s team
On Oct. 7, the Piper men’s cross country team had a breakout performance against the host Johnnies from St. John’s University. The Hamdogs dominated, beating their opponents 19 to 37.
The highlight of the meet was the Pipers’ ability to run and race as a team.
Three Pipers stepped up in the 5k race, sweeping the top three spots: Jeff Metzdorff (16:04), Tony Klappa (16:17), and Chris Yotter (16:24).
“We finally ran like we could,” Metzdorff said. “The first few meets of the season were a bit disappointing because we all knew we could run better.”
He added, “Chris Yotter toughened up and had a breakout race, and so did Brandon Gleason.”
Other top performing Pipers were sophomore Travis Bristow, who covered the course in 16:38 and placed sixth overall.
Bristow barely edged teammate Brandon Gleason. Both came across the tape in the same time, but Bristow outleand Gleason and the latter finished in seventh place.
“It was definitely our best team performance so far this year,” head coach Paul Schmaedeke said.
“All of our guys hung in there strong throughout the race and ran a very smart last mile of the race, and that is what made it successful for us.”
Women’s team
The women’s cross country team placed fifth out of five teams at the CSB/SJU Invitational, but were once again shorthanded, due to minor illnesses and injury.
Lacee Schrupp lead the charge for the women’s team at the invite. Schrupp crossed the 5k finish line in 19:30, good for sixth place overall.
A big boost for the Pipers came from sophomore Melissa Francis, who finished 26th overall with a time of 20:43.
Another boost came from Jackie Lawrence, who finished the 5k course in 21:40 and 42nd place.
Sara Warnke and Emily Ament also added to the fine performances put in by the Piper women.
Warnke ran the course in 21:49, which placed her 49th overall. Ament came in just behind Warnke in 53rd place with a time of 22:14.
All seven of the Piper finishers on the women’s side had personal-best performances in the meet.
“A group performance like that doesn’t happen every day,” coach Toby Hatlevig said.
“We are headed in the right direction and I am excited to see where we go.”
