Men’s soccer falls to St. Olaf, beats Carleton in double overtime

Staff Writer

Hamline was shut out 1-0 against the St. Olaf squad last Wednesday night.

Both teams struggled against the cold and drizzly day. Hamline outshot St. Olaf 11-8, but Ole Matt Osborne was able to get a goal in the 32nd minute. Piper goalkeeper Andrew Clement made one save in the contest.

Also, the Pipers ended a thrilling game in double overtime against Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 9, with a
Tony Vang goal in the 108th minute.

Vang took a pass from first-year Josh Faust and ripped a shot past Knight goalkeeper Ross Mattson late in the second overtime to lift Hamline to 2-3 in the MIAC.

Hamline goalkeeper Andrew Clement made six saves in the game for the victory. Counterpart Ross Mattson made five saves in the loss.

Coach Andy Coutts said the win in overtime should help boost team self-confidence.

“The guys know now that those extra minutes are no big deal,” said Coutts. “We can handle [the opponent] and succeed.”

Coutts also said having two overtime games in a row proves to the Pipers that chances the offense do not take advantage of during regulation time can cost them.

The close outcomes of recent games prove that the Pipers are working hard and continuing to be prepared for every game, versus just going through the motions for the last part of the season.

Coutts said that the Pipers will continue to work hard in training and practice their balanced offensive attack and unselfish style of play, which will carry them through the rest of the season.

“[The guys] want to play hard for each other and they have a sense that they are close to accomplishment,” said Coutts. “They want to succeed as a group, above their own individual goals.”

The Pipers continue to fight this season for a spot in the MIAC playoffs.

However, because the team has lost some close games already, they have little room for error.

“I like our chances, even though the odds aren’t with us,” Coutts said.

The soccer team is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 23, when they play at Bethel. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

The Pipers will finish the season on the road against conference opponents Concordia on Oct. 26 at 2:30 p.m. and St. Mary’s on Oct. 30. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
