St. John’s trounces Pipers 41-6
The Johnnies of St. John’s University rolled past the Pipers by a score of 41-6.
The defending Division III national champions garnered 41 points and 419 yards of total offense, while holding the Pipers (1-2, 2-2) to only one touchdown.
The Johnnies (4-1, 3-0) were able to get the ball rolling early in the contest when Corey Weber rumbled for 22 yards.
The Johnnies were able to keep the momentum moving by stymieing Hamline’s offense, and setting up good field position for their offense.
Weber continued his strong performance with two more rushing touchdowns of 19 and 15 yards on consecutive Johnnie drives in the first quarter.
The second quarter started out much the same as the first quarter as Weber ran for his fourth touchdown of the first half.
Hamline was able to respond right back to the Johnnies with a touchdown drive of their own that was highlighted by a Andy Gagnon to Dan Ryks 29-yard touchdown pass. The ensuing point after missed.
With an evenly matched second-quarter performance, the Pipers were eager to cut into the 28-6 lead starting the third quarter.
“I was pleased the way that we were able to rebound and play pretty even with them after spotting them the early points,” Hamline head coach Donovan Larson said.
But the defending national champions posed too much of a fight for Hamline on this day.
The Johnnies scored two more times in the second half, both in the third quarter, on runs by Weber and Mike Lofboom.
The Hamline offense had a hard time getting a chance to really get things rolling against the Johnnies.
The Pipers were forced to punt a total of 12 times, one which was blocked, in the contest and Gagnon was sacked a total of eight times.
The score did not completely tell the story of the game Saturday. There were many positive performances for the Pipers.
The Pipers forced St. John’s to turn the ball over four times, including two interceptions by cornerback Mike Van Loh.
Tyler Schultz, a junior safety led the Piper defense with 21 tackles, 11 which were solo.
Larson praised the play of his defensive secondary.
“The secondary played the pass well, just like they have all season long.”
The Pipers were led on the ground by Ben Ganske and Ben Dahmes who gained 41 and 36 yards, respectively.
Gagnon finished the contest 11 for 22 in passing for 89 yards with one touchdown and one
interception.
Apart from his team’s performance, Larson also noted that he “appreciates the support from all of the fans at the games this season.”
The atmosphere has been much improved this season with the addition of the Klas Center and a great start to the season.
The Pipers are currently 2-2 on the year, their best start in 10 years.
Said Larson: “If we can stay motivated through the grind of October, we could have a very successful season for Hamline.”
