Hamline powers past St. Kate’s
Hamline’s women’s soccer team toppled St. Kate’s 5-0 this past Wednesday.
The win marks the team’s first MIAC victory since the 2002 season. The Pipers (3-6-1, 1-3 MIAC) exploded with four goals in the first half to grab an early and decisive lead over St. Kate’s (2-8, 2-4 MIAC).
First-year Anna McMahon and sophomore Ann Donner each tallied a pair of goals in the contest. Senior co-captain Vanessa McClellan tallied the other goal and gave Anna McMahon an assist on the lone goal of the second half.
Coach Tony Englund felt that these three goal scorers provided a “consistent source of trouble for the Kate’s defense, particularly because of their speed and dribbling.”
Hamline held a 14-11 edge in shots on goal, but St. Kate’s held an 18-17 advantage in total shots.
Piper goalkeeper Betsy Seal made 11 saves to earn the shutout win.
Wildcat goalkeeper Katie Knodel stopped three shots in the first half, but allowed four goals in the loss.
The Pipers were able to keep the Wildcat offense at bay in the shutout.
Talking about the defense, Englund states that he thinks “the most notable improvement has been in our team defense. We are surrendering less than 1.5 goals per game, which is a credit to everyone and particularly the back line and Betsy Seal.”
The team is also giving up fewer shots than they have in the past, and of those, fewer are quality
shots on goal. Englund highlighted defenders sophomore Christine Feely and sophomore Heather Sublet as key players.
“[They] dominated the area [penalty box], making numerous key clearances. Heather’s play in the air was outstanding,” Englund said.
He also felt that sophomore goalkeeper Seal “played very well, making one spectacular save” and controlled her box really well.
Finally, Englund pointed out that first-year Megan Holec “also played a strong game at center mid, where her work rate and distribution set the tempo for [the Pipers’] attacking.”
Englund also feels that the quality of finishing shots, how well the team possesses the ball, and overall team speed are improving throughout the season, which are all key in helping the Pipers earn more tallies in the win column.
As the Pipers head into the rest of their MIAC season, they are focusing on continuing to play hard and play intelligently.
Englund feels that the team needs to “continue to demonstrate that [they] can go forward and finish against other MIAC opponents.”
Hamline’s next home game is on Oct. 12 against MIAC opponent Gustavus. Game time is sest for 4 p.m. at Pat Paterson Fields.
