Heiruspecs demand, seek, gain respect
Originally named for a misspelling of Haruspec, a Greek soothsayer, local hip-hop group Heiruspecs is making the leap from local fame to national touring.
Performing their last local show before embarking on a two-part national tour. Heiruspecs dazzled a sold-out audience at Triple Rock Social Club during their CD-release party.
The new album, entitled A Tiger Dancing, was released on Razor and Tie, a new label for the group.
The label change, said lead vocalist MC Felix, will allow the group more distribution of their name and the record.
In the past, Heiruspecs’ name recognition was much lower. With the new label, that will change, he said.
“We have been super focused on getting out new record and doing lots of shows to support the record,” said Felix.
The Triple Rock was just the first of many shows promoting the new release. Currently, Heiruspecs will be touring the East Coast. Their first tour date was in Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 4, just two days after their lyrics grabbed the ears of the Triple Rock.
Once the the group meanders back to the Midwest, a nine-day break will preclude their travel to the West Coast, opening for Cake and the Walkmen beginning in California.
Heiruspecs, who first performed in 1997 at Central High School, now operate as full-time musicians.
MC Felix said every member of the group has been full-time for one year.
“It feels awesome,” Felix said, “but we’re not rich, either.”
Felix’s schedule generally goes as follows: During the morning, Felix normally creates the lyrics that become new material.
“I’m a morning person,” Felix said.
After that, friends normally occupy the next section of Felix’s day, which includes producing for a Minneapolis group Twisted Linguistics.
“Somewhere in that mix I eat,” Felix added.
Surprisingly, the group rarely practices together.
When the group gathers to practice, new material and new sections take priority and dominate the sessions, such as the extended, lengthy freestyle set that concluded their show at the Triple Rock,
Felix said that the group truly enjoys playing at the Triple Rock.
In addition, the group also fancies First Avenue, located in downtown Minneapolis.
Outside the state, Ft. Collins in Boulder, CO has acquired the group’s affection.
In the future, Felix hopes to land a spot on MTV2.
“Everything we do leads to more touring,” Felix said.
