Fulfill Hamline’s obligation to neighborhood

I would like to commend Alan Sickbert and Gary McVey for taking seriously neighbor complaints about the behavior of Hamline students.

Hamline University, with its large institutional footprint and as a nonątax paying entity, has an obligation to the neighborhood. We, as members of the Hamline community, have individual obligations to the neighborhood that welcomes us and where people make their lives.

Like any neighbor, Hamline is obligated to contribute to the livability of the neighborhood, all the more so because Hamline, with its less-than-adequate parking, already imposes a burden on the people in the area. Hamline has responded in the last 10 years by improving the appearance of its campus, providing an oasis of beauty and calm that neighbors can enjoy.

We, as individuals who are visitors to the neighborhood, either daily visitors or four-year visitors, can also do our part. We can pick up trash on the sidewalks or roads, we can make sure not to block driveways, we can make sure that the property we rent remains as pleasing as we can make it, and we can certainly contribute by not disturbing our neighbors’ tranquillity.
