Oracle web article ignites student body
Below is a sampling of the many comments made on an Oracle web exclusive article published last week entitled “Safety and Security refuses to help student.”
“I fail to see why this girl or the Oracle would sensationalize her story and for what purpose. As a resident of the Hamline apartments, I am now uncomfortable, wondering if I was accosted outside of my apartment, would there be no one to call? Does across the street from the main campus mean out of jurisdiction? For what we pay to go to this school, I would expect a higher level of protection.”

As a student dispatcher for the Office of Safety and Security for three years, going on four, I will answer the question, ‘Why isn’t Englewood in Hamline’s jurisdiction?’ It is because Englewood Ave. belongs to the City of St. Paul, not Hamline. Hamline owns Taylor Ave. exclusively. Since we have no jurisdiction over the road all we can do to it is drive over it like everyone else.
What I would like to know is why Ms. Gladis was driving with her back doors unlocked. I am not going to lie and say that the area around here is safe, because it isn’t. You as students need to take on some responsibility and look after yourselves. Safety and Security is not here to be your babysitter; you should be old enough to take care of yourself. We are here to make sure the campus is safe, but we are only human like the rest of you.”

“As to the point made about Safety and Security not being my babysitter, I would like to say that 95 percent of the time I drive with all my doors locked. Mistakes happen. Talk about blaming the victim. I have one question: If you knew about this man before last night, then why didn’t you warn campus? To conclude, I would like to add that the dispatcher I talked to said she could do nothing for me! I asked if she could send someone over to check out the area (on campus) and she specifically told me that she could not do that. I did not know anyone from Security was called to check out the incident and therefore, yes, I was furious.”

“Am I disturbed on a fundamental level with the actions of Safety & Security? Yes, I am, and I would hope I am not the only one. That having been said, it’s been established that the street is not, in fact, under their jurisdiction. What, then, can they do? Sure, they technically can send someone (just like I technically could have gone there had I known), but what can they do once they would arrive? Nothing with any force behind it. If they told him to leave and he refused ... what then? Sometimes practicality and legality prevent us from doing something we’d rather do. If you want to vilify something, go for that.”
