Klas Cafe expands culinary options, but at what price?
With the addition of the Klas Center Cafe to university dining options, some students have begun to voice concerns about over what they say is a poor combination: Excessive prices in the cafe and inconvenient hours in the HUB.
Director of Dining Services Sharon Tracy said the higher cafe prices were intentional.
The cafe was designed to “be more upscale” and of higher quality, she said.
One available dining option at the cafe is the deli, where sandwiches are made to order. The
sandwiches are priced at $4.99 for egg, tuna or hummus, $5.29 for turkey or ham, and $5.49 for seafood.
Some students raised no issues with the cost.
“The sandwiches are the best on campus,” said first-year Sarah Barnes.
Others were not as positive.
“Like all food on campus, it’s too damn expensive,” sophomore Mike Pesko said.
Student Tiffany Kissinger said she is upset because sandwiches are not available for purchase by using a lone meal. Current meal plan rates are $3.25 for breakfast, $4.50 for lunch and $4.90 for dinner. Since the cheapest sandwich option is $4.00, additional costs must be paid through other methods.
Included in the price of the sandwich is an option of either dried fruit, a caesar salad or chips, although additional choices do not include a beverage.
This is not always clear, because the cafe’s prices are listed on paper labels, some of which are absent. Complete displays with options and prices have not arrived yet.
As a result, cash register totals have been surprising to some diners.
The menu boards are on order, and being shipped from Philadelphia, Tracy, said.
In addition, students have voiced concerns about the relocation of Java City, which was moved last year to the Klas Center from the student center lobby.
“[Java City was moved] specifically to get people to go over to the Klas Center,” Tracy said.
“I with they’d bring Java City back to the student center,” sophomore Melissa Wilson said.
The HUB, also located on the north end of campus, was affected by the cafe’s opening. The
HUB is no longer open between the breakfast hours of 7:00 and 10:30 a.m. It closes at 7:00 p.m., opposed to 10:00 p.m. last year, and it is no longer open on weekends.
“The HUB is not open enough for me to go in the evening,” first-year Teaoshka Williams said.
Dining Services chose to close the HUB during those hours because of budget concerns, Tracy said.
According to Tracy, the hours before 10:30 a.m. and after 7 p.m. were the slowest times for the HUB.
Tracy said the HUB sales were at their lowest during those morning hours.
With two dining options located close by each other, it could be expected that the two venues would draw from each other and compete, but Tracy doesn’t believe that will be the situation..
“[The HUB and the Klas Cafe] shouldn’t be competing, because we’re trying to serve more people than we’ve had before,” she said.
“We have been just as busy at the HUB as we ever have been,” she added.
Senior Michael Abata is one student who is upset with the changes.
He co-chairs the food service committee, along with junior Eric Meinz. The committee serves as an outlet for student concerns, including nutritional options, food selection, freshness, pricing, and food waste.
“We’re not getting what we’re paying for,” Abata said.
The committee plans on bringing their concerns to Tracy in the coming weeks.
Along with the Student Athletic Awareness Committee (SAAC), they also plan on co-authoring a petition that will ask for lower sandwich prices in the cafe and extended hours in the HUB.
“It is ridiculous that students can’t buy a sandwich with a single meal,” Meinz said.

So, the Klas center is pricey because it is supposed to be more upscale? They serve friggin sandwiches! What are we trying to do here anyways, promote classism on campus? Rich kids, come get your top of the line...sandwiches? Give me a break.

I hate the Klas Center, especially it's crappy over priced food. Almost as much as I hate hearing people talk about food service.

I am sick of this damn campus and their over priced garbage they call food. Go over to Macalester if you want to see a real food program.

Negative, negative, negative. Negativity isn't going to make anything better.
