Fare thee well, congress

So I’ve quit as the student congress’s technology coordinator. And it’s not over the tone at the general assembly or the quality of the leadership.

I’ve just decided that it’s not worth my time.

It’s just too much work for accomplishing just about nothing. It’s already October and just about nothing has been done. The committees met for the first time last week, right? And when’s the first meaningful resolution going to be passed? Who knows!

Now, I’m not saying that this year is in any way less productive than any previous year - I guess I’m just looking at it from that old Oracle perspective. I know that democratic governments can be a bit slow, but the Robert’s Rules that they insist on following exacerbate the problem. Instead of making things run more smoothly, everything takes more time and is more confusing. The process is just more convoluted.

In comparison with the student congress’s accomplishments thus far in the school year, we’ve put now published four issues of the paper, and student congress is just beginning its committee meetings. HUSC has met a couple dozen times (counting exec board meetings, BER meetings, caucuses, the upcoming retreat, etc.) and haven’t yet passed a resolution that matters to students.

One quarter of the fall semester has gone by. I can’t help thinking that something important should have been accomplished by now. One thing is painfully clear: For all the meetings we go to (and icebreakers we do), we get surprisingly little done.

I mean, damn, man, if we produced at that pace at the Oracle, you’d have gotten your first paper of the year in mid-October. Now, I know you can’t really compare what HUSC does to what the
Oracle does, but I just get the sense that HUSC should have accomplished something by now, for all the meetings they’ve had. At the Oracle, we have one meeting a week, then everyone goes about their business and does their jobs, and at the end, out pops a 12-page paper.

The thing is that the work of the college newspaper is very much a being out there, talking to people, seeing what’s going on sort of job. But now that I think of it, isn’t that exactly what the exec board and the representatives should be doing?

Isn’t it more important that reps talk to students than talk to each other-or as the case may be at the general assembly, one or two people taking turns talking (arrogantly, divisively, melodramatically, or angrily) at everybody else?

Everyone in HUSC talks about the importance of getting out in the campus community and discussing issues with the constituency. But what unpaid representative is going to want to take on that extra work of talking with constituents when they’ve got to be at general assembly until 12:50, at their committee meetings for god knows how long, and at the board of reps or at exec board for-freaking-ever. That has to be at least five or six hours of meetings a week!

I suggest that the student congress hold fewer mandatory meetings for council members and instead hold more formal and informal meetings with the students it’s supposed to be representing. Hold town hall forums on specific topics. Talk to your friends and classmates about university-wide issues. Get people talking and get people interested.

Now I made the personal decision that spending six hours a week in unproductive meetings is not worth my time. But I do in some way admire those who are sticking in student congress and trying to make a difference, because it’s a whole lot of work for a very small outcome.

In another way, I feel that they are deluding themselves into thinking that they can make a difference and that a difference needs to be made in the first place.

And they’re kidding themselves if they feel that they are personally appreciated for the work the student congress does-students just don’t care.
